Real Madrid has taken legal action against LaLiga president, Javier Tebas, following a complaint regarding the CVC deal signed by the league. The LaLiga clubs had voted in favor of a €2 ($2.2bn) investment deal with CVC Capital Partners back in December 2021. However, Real Madrid, along with Barcelona and Athletic Club, opposed the deal and filed a complaint against Tebas to the Administrative Sports Court (TAD). Madrid alleged that they were discriminated against by LaLiga during the negotiations with the investment fund CVC over TV rights.
The complaint filed by Real Madrid accused Tebas of abuse of power and lack of transparency in calling and managing the assembly on August 12, 2021, where the agreement with CVC was discussed. Madrid claimed that Tebas violated the requirement to give clubs 10 days’ notice before an assembly by only providing eight days’ notice. TAD believes that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that Tebas committed serious infractions by not adhering to the notice period.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Club took legal action against LaLiga, branding the agreement with CVC as “illegal.” On the other hand, LaLiga defended the deal, stating that it would strengthen the clubs. However, a court dismissed the lawsuit back in February, leading to further tensions between the clubs and the league. Recently, the TAD suspended Pedro Rocha as the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for two years due to a serious infraction related to abuse of power during his tenure as interim president.
The legal action taken by Real Madrid against Javier Tebas could have significant implications for LaLiga and its president. The accusations of abuse of power and lack of transparency in the CVC deal negotiations have raised questions about the integrity of the league’s management. The ongoing legal disputes and court proceedings could potentially tarnish the reputation of LaLiga and its leadership, affecting the relationships between the clubs and the league authorities.
The allegations made by Real Madrid against Javier Tebas highlight the challenges faced by LaLiga in managing its affairs. The legal action taken by the club underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the decision-making processes within the league. The outcome of the proceedings initiated by TAD will be crucial in determining the future course of action for LaLiga and its president, Javier Tebas.
