Analysis of Kylian Mbappé’s Unpaid Bonuses and Wages by PSG

Reports have emerged that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has not yet paid Kylian Mbappé his bonus plus two months’ worth of wages in 2024. This revelation has added fuel to the fire surrounding Mbappé’s recent comments expressing unhappiness with the club. Mbappé, who recently completed a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer, called out certain individuals at PSG during a news conference on Tuesday, stating that they had made him “unhappy.”

Following Mbappé’s comments, sources within PSG reportedly felt that he was being “ungrateful.” In an effort to recoup the money invested in his development, PSG has decided not to pay Mbappé the €80 million ($86 million) owed in wages and bonuses. This decision is based on an agreement made between Mbappé and PSG in August, prior to his departure. The club claims that Mbappé is seeking the back pay because he was sidelined for the end of the season once he informed them of his intention to leave.

Mbappé is said to be owed his February bonus, as well as his wages for April and May. It remains unclear whether PSG will honor his wages for June. Contrary to reports that he was told he would never play for PSG again, sources denied such claims, stating that the club had made efforts to keep him happy over the past seven years. Mbappé revealed that PSG informed him he would not feature in the 2023-24 season and credited manager Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos with “saving” him.

PSG’s Future Plans

In response to Mbappé’s departure, PSG is said to be focusing on a new project centered around collective strength. This shift comes after Mbappé came close to joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 before ultimately deciding to extend his contract with PSG. Former Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman believes that Mbappé will have to win over the fans and prove himself as a world-class player at his new club. He noted that Mbappé’s arrival at Real Madrid coincides with the team’s recent success in the Champions League and emphasized the need for him to outshine his teammate Vinícius Júnior, who is expected to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

Overall, the situation between Mbappé and PSG highlights the complexities of player contracts, financial obligations, and the emotional ties that bind athletes to their clubs. As Mbappé embarks on a new chapter with Real Madrid, the unresolved issues with PSG serve as a reminder of the intricate relationships within the world of professional football.
