Manchester United’s coaching staff is facing a period of uncertainty, with former South Africa striker Benni McCarthy’s contract set to expire in the summer. McCarthy, who arrived at Old Trafford in July 2022 as part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching team, has not been approached by the club about signing a new deal. This could potentially mean that McCarthy, who has been credited with helping Marcus Rashford score 30 goals last season, may be on his way out at the end of the current season.
If McCarthy does indeed leave Manchester United, he has ambitions of returning to management. McCarthy has previously had spells in charge of Cape Town City and AmaZulu in South Africa. Despite being a popular figure among players and staff at United, the lack of communication from the club regarding his future is leaving McCarthy in a state of uncertainty.
The uncertainty over McCarthy’s future adds to the existing questions surrounding Erik ten Hag’s long-term prospects at Manchester United. Ten Hag, along with assistants Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, has been under severe pressure after a disappointing second season in charge. The arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has only intensified the situation for the coaching staff.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, along with his INEOS team led by Sir Dave Brailsford, are reportedly not convinced by Ten Hag’s performance. While the decision regarding Ten Hag’s future will be delegated to the new football leadership team, there are concerns about the lack of standout candidates available to potentially take over the managerial position at United.
Manchester United could face competition from the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich in their search for a new manager. All three clubs are also in the market for new managers ahead of the summer, which could limit United’s options in terms of finding a suitable replacement for Ten Hag.
The recent announcement of football director John Murtough stepping down has further complicated the situation at United. Until the arrival of incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, the day-to-day management will be overseen by existing staff members such as deputy football director Andy O’Boyle, director of player negotiations Matt Hargreaves, and director of football operations David Harrison.
