One of the most anticipated events in Major League Soccer (MLS) is the All-Star game, where the best players from the league come together to face off against Liga MX’s top talents. This year, fans are in for a treat as Lionel Messi will be headlining the MLS All-Star roster for the first time.
Messi, who recently joined Inter Miami CF in July 2023, narrowly missed out on participating in last year’s All-Star Weekend. The 30-player MLS All-Star roster was carefully selected through a combination of fan, player, and media votes, as well as input from Columbus Crew manager Wilfried Nancy and two personal picks from MLS commissioner Don Garber. Notably, all four Inter Miami players earned their spots on the team due to an overwhelming number of votes from fans.
In total, 18 different clubs are represented on the roster, with Inter Miami and the Columbus Crew being the most well-represented teams. The chosen captain of the MLS roster will be decided by a fan vote, with four candidates yet to be named.
This year’s All-Star game will mark the third encounter between MLS and Liga MX All Stars, following the matches in 2021 and 2022. In both previous instances, MLS emerged victorious, showcasing intense competition and high levels of play.
According to Camilo Durana, the MLS executive vice president of properties and events, the 2024 edition promises to be a night to remember for Columbus’ passionate fans and viewers worldwide tuning in via MLS Season Pass. With a roster full of top talent and past successes against Liga MX, expectations are high for another thrilling match-up.
Aside from the game itself, All-Stars will also participate in a skills challenge, where 10 players from each side will compete in various soccer-related tests. This adds an exciting element to the event and allows players to showcase their individual talents beyond the traditional game format.
