In a surprising turn of events, former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus has reportedly signed with the LA Galaxy, according to a source from ESPN. This signing is expected to be officially announced with contract details on Thursday, marking the end of Reus’s lengthy tenure with Dortmund that began in 2012.
Throughout his time with Dortmund, Reus scored a total of 171 goals in 426 appearances across league and cup matches. He also clinched two German Cup titles in 2017 and 2021, as well as two Supercup trophies in 2013 and 2019. On the international stage, Reus represented Germany 48 times, finding the back of the net 15 times.
With the addition of Reus, the LA Galaxy stands to benefit greatly. The team, which has been experiencing a resurgence in form, currently sits at the top of the MLS’ Western Conference table. Following a disappointing 2023 season without a playoff spot and a ten-year drought since their last MLS Cup victory, the Galaxy has emerged as serious title contenders in 2024.
Led by key goalscorers and chance-creators like Gabriel Pec, Joseph Paintsil, Dejan Joveljic, and Riqui Puig, the Galaxy now adds Reus to their attacking arsenal. With his experience and skill set, Reus could potentially be the missing piece that propels the team to MLS Cup glory.
Currently taking a short break after their recent exit in the Leagues Cup tournament, the Galaxy will be back in action on August 24th for a home game against Atlanta United FC. With eight games remaining in the regular season before the playoffs commence, the team is well-positioned to make a deep postseason run.
Before committing to the LA Galaxy, there were reports linking Reus to a move to St. Louis City. However, the decision to join the Galaxy could prove to be a pivotal one for both the player and the team. As they strive for their first MLS Cup title since 2014, the addition of Marco Reus could be the catalyst that elevates the LA Galaxy to a championship-winning level.
