Atlanta United FC has experienced a rollercoaster of success and challenges under the leadership of Carlos Bocanegra. Since 2015, Bocanegra played a key role in the executive team that led the team to victory in the 2018 MLS Cup. Alongside other key figures such as Darren Eales and Gerardo Martino, Atlanta United FC achieved three trophies in its first three years, showcasing an impressive start in MLS.
However, despite early success, the team faced difficulties in recent years. Bocanegra’s player-recruitment strategy, which included high-priced players like Ezequiel Barco and Santiago Sosa, did not yield the expected results. Atlanta United FC also struggled to reach the postseason in two of the last four seasons, leading to a decision to remove Bocanegra from his role as vice president and technical director.
In light of these challenges, team president and CEO Garth Lagerwey has taken over Bocanegra’s responsibilities. Lagerwey, known for his team-building experience at Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders, brings a fresh perspective to the club. With his appointment in 2022, there is an expectation for Lagerwey to make changes and steer Atlanta United FC in a new direction.
Despite his removal from the team, Lagerwey expressed gratitude for Bocanegra’s dedication and success during his nine years with Atlanta United FC. The decision to part ways with Bocanegra signifies a desire for growth and evolution within the club. While Bocanegra’s contributions were valuable in the team’s early triumphs, the organization is now ready to embrace change and pursue new opportunities.
The departure of Carlos Bocanegra marks a significant shift in leadership for Atlanta United FC. As the team navigates a new chapter under Garth Lagerwey’s guidance, there is anticipation for renewal and progress. By acknowledging past achievements and recognizing the need for adaptation, Atlanta United FC is poised to embark on a transformative journey towards future success.
