Inter Miami assistant coach Javier Morales provided an update on Lionel Messi’s injury, confirming that the star player will not be available for the upcoming match against New York City FC due to a right hamstring injury. However, Morales expressed optimism that Messi could return for the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal match against Liga MX club Monterrey on Wednesday.
Since Messi’s last appearance for Inter Miami on March 13, the team has experienced some challenges, including losses in matches where the star player was not present. Despite being undefeated in the five games Messi played, Miami has suffered defeats in two out of the three games without him, including a significant 4-0 loss to New York Red Bulls.
In an effort to strengthen the team, Inter Miami recently signed defender Marcelo Weigandt on loan from Boca Juniors for the remainder of the MLS season. This signing comes after the departure of DeAndre Yedlin, who was traded to FC Cincinnati. Additionally, midfielder Federico Redondo is also expected to miss the upcoming match due to an injury to his left lateral collateral ligament, adding to the team’s challenges.
Expectations for the Match
With Messi sidelined, Inter Miami faces New York City FC, who are looking to end a three-game losing streak on the road. Miami has a solid record of 2-2-0 against Eastern Conference opponents and boasts a conference-leading 12 goals. Luis Suárez has been a key player for Miami, leading the team in goals for Eastern Conference matches.
The absence of Lionel Messi poses a significant challenge for Inter Miami as they prepare to face New York City FC. While the team remains hopeful for Messi’s return in the upcoming Concacaf Champions Cup match, they must focus on delivering a strong performance in his absence. The recent signings and injuries within the team add to the complexity of the situation, emphasizing the need for teamwork and resilience as they navigate through this period without their star player.
