Spanish Midfielder Sergi Roberto Joins Como on a Free Transfer

Spanish midfielder Sergi Roberto has officially agreed to join Como on a free transfer after departing his longtime club Barcelona. The 32-year-old made the decision not to extend his contract with Barça after it expired in June. Despite interest from other clubs such as Ajax and Fiorentina, Roberto ultimately chose to reunite with former teammate Cesc Fabregas at the Serie A newcomers.

Cesc Fabregas, who is now the coach at Como, played a crucial role in persuading Sergi Roberto to make the move to the Italian club. Fabregas, a former Barcelona player himself, was able to convince Roberto to join Como and become a part of the growing Spanish contingent at the club. Fabregas has also brought in other Spanish players like Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno, as well as Real Madrid’s Nico Paz.

Roberto’s arrival at Como is part of a larger effort by the club to strengthen their squad for their return to the Italian top flight after 23 years. Alongside Roberto, Como has also signed former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane, as well as players like Alberto Dossena and Andrea Belotti. The team is looking to make an impact in Serie A after earning promotion from Serie B last season.

Sergi Roberto’s departure from Barcelona marks the end of an era, as he spent 18 years at the Catalan club after joining as a teenager. During his time at Barça, Roberto made 373 appearances for the first team and even served as the club captain in his final season. Talks of renewing his contract were put on hold due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, ultimately leading to his decision to move on to Como.

Como’s Debut in Serie A

Como faced a tough start to their Serie A campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Juventus in their opening match. However, with the addition of players like Sergi Roberto and a revamped squad under the leadership of Cesc Fabregas, Como will be looking to make a statement in the Italian top flight this season. The Spanish influence at the club, combined with the talents of their new signings, could prove to be a winning formula for Como as they aim to compete at the highest level.
