The ongoing labor dispute between the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) and the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) shows no signs of resolution, as PRO has extended its lockout of union referees for a second round of matches this weekend. Despite prior negotiations and a rejected tentative agreement, PRO has reaffirmed that the terms of the previous agreement reached on February 13 remain their best offer.
Peter Manikowski, the president of PSRA, expressed disappointment in PRO’s actions, labeling them as bullying tactics and a failure to listen to the union membership. Following a bargaining session that took place last week, the PSRA sent a revised offer to PRO with significant pay increases, improved travel benefits, and compensation for image and likeness fees. However, PRO rejected the proposal, deeming it unrealistic and unsustainable.
The tension between the two parties has escalated, leading to the addition of 17 replacement referees for the upcoming matches. Former professional and international match officials have also expressed interest in working MLS matches, further complicating the situation. The PSRA’s demands for a 77% increase in compensation from 2023 have been met with skepticism and pushback from PRO, creating a significant roadblock in the negotiations.
Both PRO and PSRA have accused each other of engaging in unfair labor practices throughout the negotiations. PRO alleged that PSRA members unlawfully threatened potential replacement workers, while the PSRA filed two Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges against PRO. These charges include allegations of direct dealing and issuing ultimatums to union membership regarding the acceptance of the tentative agreement.
This current labor dispute is not an isolated incident, as PRO has previously locked out PSRA referees during CBA negotiations.
