Barcelona’s Transfer Mission: Federico Chiesa on Their Radar

Barcelona is in a race against time to secure a new winger before the transfer window slams shut. According to sources at ESPN, one of the names being considered is Juventus’ Federico Chiesa. The 26-year-old has piqued Barça’s interest as he has expressed a desire to join the club, and Juventus seems willing to part ways with him.

High Costs of Other Targets

Initially, Barcelona had set their sights on Spain and Athletic Club’s Nico Williams as their preferred option coming into the summer transfer window. AC Milan’s Rafael Leão was also in the mix. However, exorbitant price tags on both players have pushed Barcelona to explore more cost-effective alternatives. Williams boasts a €58 million release clause, while Milan is demanding a steep €100 million for Leão.

Chiesa’s Opportunity

With new Juventus head coach Thiago Motta not viewing Chiesa as part of his plans, Barcelona has been presented with an opportunity to make a move for the Italian winger. Juventus is reportedly willing to entertain offers in the region of €15 million, especially considering Chiesa’s contract is set to expire next year. Although Chiesa has had setbacks due to injury, he managed to have a decent season with Juventus in 2022-23, earning a call-up to Italy’s Euro 2024 squad.

Despite Chiesa’s potential, sources indicate that Barcelona will insist on an extensive medical evaluation before finalizing any deal. Moreover, the club’s financial constraints add another layer of complexity. Barcelona’s summer signing, Dani Olmo, is yet to be registered with LaLiga due to the club exceeding their spending limit. Any new arrivals will necessitate departures to balance the books. Players like Vitor Roque, Clément Lenglet, Eric García, and Ansu Fati could be on the chopping block.

In addition to Chiesa, Barcelona is eyeing Kingsley Coman as a budget-friendly alternative. The Bayern Munich winger could be available for a reasonable fee this month. This demonstrates Barcelona’s strategic shift towards more financially viable targets in the current transfer market landscape. Other potential options are also being considered as Barcelona looks to bolster their squad within the confines of their budget.

By shifting their focus to players like Federico Chiesa and Kingsley Coman, Barcelona is showcasing their adaptability in navigating the competitive and financially demanding world of modern football transfers. As the clock ticks down on the transfer window, Barcelona’s decision-makers face a pivotal moment in shaping the future of the club’s attacking options.
