Amnesty International has taken a stand against FIFA, urging the organization to release a review that investigates the treatment of migrant workers involved in the construction of stadia and infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The independent review was conducted following the tournament that took place between November and December of 2022. Despite the findings being approved by the FIFA Council in March, Amnesty International is demanding transparency and action from FIFA.
The international human rights organization has accused the Qatari authorities of neglecting to address the deaths of workers that occurred during the construction period leading up to the 2022 World Cup. Amnesty has highlighted extreme heat and hazardous working conditions as contributing factors to the passing of numerous migrant workers. With FIFA’s upcoming annual Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, Amnesty International is calling on the global football governing body to make the review on working conditions in Qatar public. Steve Cockburn, the head of Labour Rights and Sport at Amnesty, emphasized the need for FIFA to take responsibility for the human rights violations that have been associated with the World Cup. The delay in disclosing the findings of the review only adds to the suffering of families who have lost loved ones and workers who have been mistreated.
FIFA has been urged to swiftly address the recommendations outlined in the review and to take immediate action to rectify the harms caused to migrant workers. Cockburn emphasized that while FIFA cannot undo the pain and suffering that has already occurred, the organization has the power and resources to make a positive impact moving forward.
