A recent incident involving a soccer agent sending a threatening email to a senior director at Premier League club Chelsea has created quite a stir. The agent, Saif Rubie, demanded a six-figure commission over the transfer of French defender Kurt Zouma. This incident took place after Zouma’s transfer to West Ham from Chelsea the previous year.

Saif Rubie, who is 45 years old, has pleaded not guilty to one charge under the Malicious Communications Act. The trial is currently ongoing at the Southwark Crown Court in London. The prosecutor, Arizuna Asante, revealed that Rubie claimed he and his partners were owed a significant amount of money over the deal. However, Marina Granovskaia, Chelsea’s director of football, testified that Chelsea only received a total of £29.1m from the transfer, which included £4.1m paid to Zouma as a “termination payment.”
Granovskaia expressed in her testimony that the threatening email from Rubie made her feel nervous, worried, and threatened. She stated that she feared being confronted by people demanding money from her. This incident put her in a state of discomfort and anxiety, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The Kia Joorabchian Reference
Furthermore, in the email sent by Rubie to Granovskaia, there was a mention of a previous incident involving soccer agent Kia Joorabchian. This incident, dating back to 2008, involved Joorabchian being accosted in a restaurant and demanded money at his office. The email from Rubie insinuated that he did not want Granovskaia to find herself in a similar predicament, hinting at potential consequences if his demands were not met.
During the trial, Granovskaia confirmed that Rubie had never threatened her prior to the email. Additionally, she stated that she had a vague recollection of the incident involving Joorabchian when she received Rubie’s email. When questioned by Rubie’s lawyer, Matthew Radstone, Granovskaia clarified that she was unaware of Joorabchian not mentioning Rubie’s name when reporting the incident to the police.
