Manchester United Target Wolves Head Coach for New Coaching Setup

Manchester United is reportedly interested in speaking to Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil about a potential role in a new coaching setup at Old Trafford. With Ineos now overseeing football operations at United, led by Ineos director Sir Dave Brailsford, the club is looking to build a new coaching structure with O’Neil as the head coach.

While Erik ten Hag’s future as manager remains uncertain, sources have revealed that Manchester United has already evaluated other potential candidates, including England manager Gareth Southgate, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank. O’Neil has been highlighted as a possible successor due to his successful stints at Wolves and previously with Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Reports suggest that United have expressed their interest in O’Neil, with senior figures from the club eager to discuss his intentions. Although the specific role that United may offer O’Neil is not yet known, the club is also looking to strengthen its entire coaching team as part of the new setup under the Ineos regime.

Gary O’Neil, a former player for Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, and West Ham United, transitioned into coaching after signing a three-year contract with Wolves last summer. He started his coaching career with Liverpool U-18s, where he was hired by Michael Edwards, who is now the sporting director at Liverpool. O’Neil and Edwards had previously worked together during Portsmouth’s time in the Premier League.

Should Manchester United decide to offer O’Neil a position at the club, they may have to negotiate compensation with Wolves, given that O’Neil is currently under contract with the club. This potential financial hurdle could impact United’s pursuit of O’Neil for the head coaching role.

Manchester United’s interest in Gary O’Neil as a potential head coach signals a new direction for the club under the ownership of Ineos. The club’s pursuit of O’Neil, along with other managerial candidates, reflects a strategic approach to building a strong coaching structure for the future. As discussions progress, it will be interesting to see if O’Neil emerges as the leading candidate for the coveted role at Old Trafford.
